The Klan Kan 2024
Or Something Like That
Good Evening.
Well is it good? Idk anymore.
Not sure how to even begin this but had to get it out. Maybe other people read it or can learn from it—maybe not. But the point I want to make is that there are many people just like me who feel the same, but our stories are not being told. And that feeling is terror.
I feel incredibly scared about this upcoming election. And I am not the only one. We are at a point where this is real, and the possible repercussions are dire.
Earlier this week, former President Fanta skin had a klan presidential rally at Madison Square Garden. I don’t want to get too into all of it but before the main guy even spoke, this is a summary of the discourse:
They called Puerto Rico garbage.
They said latinos have too many kids because they come inside like they do our country.
This was followed by a joke about allowing them into the country with open arms while also acting like he was shooting them.
They said Black people carve watermelons at Halloween. (what)
They went on and on about how America is just for Americans.
They confirmed, in their own words, it was a Nazi rally.
Again poked fun at the race and ethnicity of the Vice President.
Then the main event got up there and said all the usual hits but followed it up:
Non-white people are savages.
The need to get rid of people they disagree with.
Military action against US Citizens he doesn’t like.
Real cool stuff.
It was so blatantly racist that even the majority of the ‘both sides’ news media had to actually nod to how bad it was.
In the aftermath, I got SO SICK of white pundits saying how this would be the nail in the coffin or wasn’t what a campaign would want to be associated with with a week to go.
They couldn’t be more wrong. This is EXACTLY the conversation they wanted right now because they know they are not alone in their harboring of hate. Their displeasure with diversity. Their white power platitudes.
This was an open air, televised, calling all racists Klan rally. You know it, I know it, THEY know it. This was the open invitation to join the cause and put it all out there. There is fear on their end that sanity is winning out. The polls are tighter than they want in demographics they thought were theirs and they are putting out the call to come back home racists, you are getting too cozy with the coloreds.
It is sick. But what is sicker, is in television discussions following this, surrogates got somehow even MORE RACIST.
On CNN a nasty comment was made towards Mehdi Hasan implying that he should be blown up an murdered. A stupid remark about a ‘beeper going off’ that should never have been allowed on a platform. CNN, after waiting for outrage and not in a proactive manner, “condemned” his words but come on—these people still employ Scott Jennings so they really don’t care about decency.
And the campaigns go on. Nothing changes except we are one day deeper in dread.
But here we are, less than a week away from the end of this election. I am scared because of the permission structure that has been created for even more hate and racism.
I am scared because of the story that gets told. The people telling the stories are often wealthy white men who have nothing to fear except maybe stock market fluctuations. I fear for my safety. I fear for safety of friends. For safety of women. For safety of Black women. For safety of anyone who doesn’t fit into the increasingly narrow definition of what is okay in America.
Every minute we inch past the ‘awakenings’ of 2020 I/we are reminded how little our lives actually matter because if they did, this wouldn’t be a contest. If our lives mattered, this is what the electoral map would look like:
But it doesn’t because so many view us as an inconvenience to deal with. We are the fly buzzing around their picnic of steak and lobster. They want nothing more than to be rid of us and to enjoy the spoils of their greatness.
I am scared because I don’t know what comes next if they win. I know most of the country doesn’t agree with them. I KNOW that, but that isn’t how our white supremist electoral college system works. And on top of that, the orange man also said he has a secret plan with the Speaker of the House for the election so we already know they are trying to dismiss the voters who don’t look like them.
It is hard to wake up in this country. It is hard to walk down the street and not know if the person you are passing or the person looking you up online is someone who sees the world as it is and accepts us as humans; or they are on the side that wishes we were exterminated.
It is harder to watch the clock tick down to November 5th and what that will mean for so many of us left on the outside. We are in a country that has never really wanted us, has at times decided to tolerate us, and now we have to sit and await our fate while certain people treat it as a spectator sport. And again, the people who have the platforms to comment on this, have the privilege of not being impacted. And who knows, if they even tried the billionaires would probably shut it down anyway.
This is heavy. It hurts. And I am honestly terrified of what comes next.
PS—I DO like watermelon AND I went to Puerto Rico earlier this year and here are a few shots I took:
If this is garbage, maybe Oscar the Grouch is on to something.
