Dr. Dre Don't Just Stand There
Operate
My mom said something very poignant in the car the other day. When talking about Tangerine King and his illegal destruction of the White House…and democracy…
“Why doesn’t somebody do something?”
A simple question that also houses a statement.
As the 34 time felony ‘President” bends or ignores every law imaginable, little is done to hold him accountable.
Sure, there are incredible orgs like Legal Defense Fund (LDF) and Democracy Forward (ps either of you…hire ya boy) and many others doing amazing work on the ground to challenge these actions in court every step of the way. But there are two problems—well more but we will focus on two:
He owns the courts, and
Where are the people with institutional power?
The Courts Suck
A line of defense for the most marginalized and honestly for the whole concept of life in America has been the fact the courts are supposed to be a fair and unbiased arbiter of the law. A legal referee calling the proverbial balls and strikes.
Well.. what happens if one of the people playing on the team paid for the referees, paid for the lights, the field, the baseballs, and 99% of the fans in the stadium? Will the refs rule against them? What happens if in the unlikely event the ref DOES break rank and rule against them…they just decide to proceed as if the ball they hit out of bounds was a homerun anyway and belittle anyone who challenges the score?
That is the court system. Federal courts are stacked with almost teenage judges who either know nothing about the law…or pretend not to when it applies to that guy.
For years, even outside of power, whenever democrats (Joe Biden) tried to do something good like student debt relief, abortion protections, blocking racism…republicans quickly would file lawsuits in friendly Texas or Florida courts to then block the effort nationwide.
And then…if something gets to the unSupreme Court, it will rule 6-3 in favor of whatever nonsense is being asked by the Orange Administration. The courts are not there to defend us anymore. They are like HR at work. HR is there to support the company NOT YOU. Sure they have processes and procedures for addressing issues, but at the end of the day THEY are employed by the company.
Lawmakers Are Skurred
Remember the colloquialism that something would take an ‘act of congress’ to achieve? Well.. that is not happening about much of anything these days.
Similar to LDF and Democracy Forward (seriously HIRE ME) we have brave leaders like AOC or Jasmine Crockett who will call out this for what it is and ask others to do the same.
The problem… no one really seems to care to join them outside of fundraising emails and texts (please stop) that point out the latest bad thing he has done and then ask you to ‘chip in’ for JUST $5.
Outside of that, where are the fighters? Why not put more pressure on the administration? Where is the Oversight Committee? Remember when the aforementioned AOC was seeking to head that but the dems wanted to lean further into gerontocracy?
Why not have a daily briefing pointing out what he is doing and how it is hurting the people and explain it in terms of people not politics? Karly Kingsley (whoever that is) has the right idea. Imagine those with institutional power and resources saying this:
Simple. Yet effective. Just like my mom’s question. Too bad so many are not doing anything at all.
Have a good weekend…
