Chi Town Standddd Up
Last week I talked about the Orange Idiot and his plans to send troops to Chicago.
If you missed that, and my personal whining about cancelling a trip there for my mom’s birthday— read that here—
This past weekend, he really did it. Well he tried at least, because Chicago—as they tend to do— STOOD UP.
Chicago, by its very existence, is the epitome of resilience. Nicknamed the “Second City” Chicago got the moniker from its incredible effort to bounce back after the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. Reinventing itself in face of adversity and becoming the 3rd largest city in the United States.
They don’t play around, and if you had to deal with those winters…you would be strong too.
It Starts At The Top
Unlike in DC, where leadership is left to a cowering mayor, Chicago has strong leadership in the form of Governor Pritzker (one of the few good billionaires) and Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson.
Pritzker and Johnson both pledged to do everything possible to fight this attempt and also to respond.
In DC, the mayor I won’t name agreed to DC law enforcement working with ICE and the National Guard as they ruin DC.
Mayor Johnson, however— said nah, we good.
Mayor Johnson signed an Executive Order that:
Says police will not “collaborate with federal agents on joint law enforcement patrols, arrest operations, or other law enforcement duties including civil immigration enforcement.”
Urges federal law enforcement officers who operate in Chicago “to refrain from wearing masks, to wear and use body cameras and to identify themselves to members of the public with names and badge numbers.
Directs city departments to “pursue all available legal and legislative avenues to resist coordinated efforts from the federal government” that violate the rights of Chicagoans.
The Mayor basically signed an order that was the equivalent of saying “I GOT TIME TODAY.”
This is the first elected leader actively legislating against the unconstitutional takeovers. I hope and expect others to follow.
BUT THE PEOPLE
But the story of the weekend and what is the backbone of any effective movement rests with the people.
The people of Chicago showed up and out this weekend and will continue to do so.
Thousands came downtown into the Loop to protest the actions of this administration.
As 300 federal agents were set to be sent to the Great Lakes Naval Station on Saturday, a funny coincidence happened.
The city was quick to clarify that the trucks were there for other reasons, like responding to protests and events related to the annual Taste of Chicago.
That may be true…but maybe not..who knows..watch the video and make your own conclusions.
This is not over, by a long shot, but the Orange One has tampered down his attacks on Chicago a bit.
The Liar In Chief went from this:'
To this-
I hope every city, every town, every village, and every hamlet looks at what Chicago is doing and replicates to the best of their ability.
We need everybody to keep that same energy. If highschool or 90’s Disney taught us anything, bullies hate when you fight back.
Keep it up Chicago.
